Cleaning the Dungeon? // Daphne

Dobby wandered down to the Slytherin Dungeon. It was his job today to clean the Common Room of the Slytherins and the Gryffindors today. He always kept Gryffindor for later, knowing he could meet Harry and his friends there. Well, not always, but it was possible. So, Dobby had decided to go to the Slytherin Dungeon first. And he was slightly frightened by the idea of going there, because his old master's son was a Slytherin: Draco Malfoy. And Dobby did not want to cross paths with a Malfoy. They still frightened him and treated him like vermin. There was nothing that would ever stop that, even though he was a free elf now. Dobby knew how mean Draco was.

Dreading to meet him in the common rooms, Dobby made his way down to the Dungeon and into the Slytherin room. The little elf let out a breath of relief when he found the room empty. At least he didn't see anyone from where he was standing. There was no way of telling if someone was up in the bedrooms. Still, relieved by the silence, Dobby went to work.

Sitting cross-legged on her bed, Daphne tapped her nails with her wand, sealing the nail polish and making the tiny Golden Snitches fly about on her thumbs. The blonde had never bothered with stuff such as nail art, perfume, or other girly things. But recently someone had caught her eye, and she decided that it was high time to become more of a girl. Not by much, because the thought of being a girly-girl like Lavender Brown or the Patel twins certainly didn't appeal to her. But just a little, so he would notice her out of the sea of girls. She was certain she had absolutely no chance with him, but a girl could dream.

Right now she was supposed to be at study hall. But Daphne couldn't focus. Her mind was on a trillion things right now, amongst those things being her audition for violin first chair. Professor Flitwick still hadn't announced who was getting first chair this year. She dearly hoped that she had gotten it, because that was the thing she wanted most out of her time out of Hogwarts. She loved learning magic, but she loved learning and playing music even more. She wasn't going to follow in her mother's footsteps, nor was she going to follow in her father's. Her father wanted her to get a "normal" wizarding job. But that wasn't for Daphne. She didn't want a normal wizarding job. What she wanted, more than anything else in the world, was to join the London Wizarding Symphony Orchestra when she finished Hogwarts. And she hoped that under Professor Flitwick's tutelage, she could end up doing just that.

Grinning at the tiny Snitches on her nails, Daphne picked her textbooks up, and left the girl's dormitory. She was just going to study in the common room, then sneak out later for some much needed violin playing. She was much too tense today and a good hour of playing would do her wonders. She raised her eyebrows slightly as soft shuffles and the sound of things being carefully moved reached her ears. Upon seeing who it was, she blinked, for a minute mistaking the creature for her own house elf. She wished Mitzi could be here with her; she missed her friend and nanny dearly. She shuffled from foot to foot for a second, not wanting to startle the creature. "Hello," she finally greeted the elf softly, giving it a friendly smile.

Dobby went on about his business for quite a while, emptying rubbish bins and moving chairs and sofas to clean underneath. Dobby would always be thorough at his work. Even though most elves probably went on about it with a grumpy face, he did quite the opposite. Not that the elf was actually smiling, but at least he had a content look on his face. Free as he was, he still was hard-working and he actually liked it.

Snipping his fingers, Dobby let things levitate in the air, not too much above the ground, so he could groom the floor underneath those pieces of furniture. He was an elf after all, no need to lift stuff himself. This was the world of magic. Dobby snipped his fingers again and the sofa he had been cleaning under was gently placed on the floor again. Dobby grabbed the groom and continued to clean the floor when he heard feet shuffling behind him. He turned around abruptly at the sound of a soft 'hello' and was surprised to be greeted by a friendly smile in this Common Room.

Respectfully, Dobby bowed before the young miss. “Hello, miss.” he greeted in his most respectful tone. Seeing the books under her arms, he frowned. “Dobby hopes he does not disturb miss from learning.” the elf then said, his voice almost dreadful.

She almost bowed herself in return, but remembering the amount of times Mitzi chided her as a child when she bowed back, Daphne refrained. For the life of her she couldn't ever understand why the elf had always treated it as such a big deal; to her it was just a mark of respect - if someone bowed to you, you bowed back. But if Mitzi didn't want her doing it, she wouldn't. She didn't agree with it, but whatever. House elves were odd and stubborn little creatures.

Grinning, she waved a dismissive hand at his comment. "Nah, it's alright. I wasn't really in the mood for studying. I have other things on my mind." She knew she was going to have to get around to her mountain of essays eventually, but she really didn't feel in the mood to start that today. If she had been down in the hall studying, like she should have been, she might have started that mountain, if only to keep her eyes off of her crush. Daphne could be extremely productive when she wanted to not draw any attention to herself.

"So, uh, how is freedom treating you?" she asked, plonking herself down on the couch and attempting to make some sort of small talk. She dropped her books by her side and brushed some fringe from her eyes. "Is there anything I can help with? I feel kinda guilty just sitting around while you clean up our mess..."

Dobby, slightly leaning on his broom, looked up at Daphne with his big green eyes and seemed pleased to see that it was only her. She was one of the few students who weren't looking up to Malfoy for behaviour-guidelines. The elf knew at least that much. There were only three types of people: those who ignored creatures like Dobby, those who treated them like vermin and avoided them, and those who were actually nice to them. Dobby liked the nice ones, they sometimes gave Dobby things and they talked with him, were polite, treated him as an equal. He likes those most, even though he certainly wasn't used to that kind of behaviour.

“Dobby is happy to be free of his master, miss.” the elf said. He was being honest about that. He owed that freedom to his friend Harry Potter. And for that he would be forever thankful.

That being said, the elf continued to broom the floor around him, but he was still listening to the blonde. Upon being offered help, Dobby abruptly stopped his work and looked at her again. He looked almost horrified. “No, miss!” he replied quickly. “Dobby can not accept that. See, he is being paid for his work and students shall not do his work, they're here to learn. That's why Dobby has to clean.”

Bringing her legs up onto the couch so she sat cross-legged, Daphne watched the interesting little creature. "Well that's good. I'm glad you're enjoying it," she replied with a smile. She'd be enjoying freedom too if she'd had to slave away for the Malfoys year in, year out. She shuddered at the thought of having to do everything the brat commanded, and having to clean up his dirty socks and underwear sounded the most vile thing in the world. She wasn't as fond of Harry Potter as the rest of the wizarding world seemed to be, but she had to admit that it had been a noble thing he'd done, freeing Dobby. "It must be a relief to be away from them after so long."

She rolled her eyes good-naturedly at the elf's comment that the students were here to learn, and a soft laugh left her lips. "Maybe some. Some of them still don't seem to be able to spell the name of the school, let alone write anything that would be useful in exams," she replied, thoughts instantly flying to Crabbe and Goyle; Daphne marveled that they had managed to get all the way to their fourth year without having being held back. She didn't have anything against them (except for their choice of friend), but given how slow they appeared whenever they opened their mouths, it was baffling how they made it this far. "I have to admit though, it's all a bit much at times. And some of the stuff is really useless. I mean, where exactly am I going to use a hair-thickening charm?" she lamented with a frown.

She opened her Charms textbook, green eyes scanning over the page before she closed the book with a soft slam. It was no use. The words just didn't make sense, merely managing to look as if written in a complete different language, not simple English. Rubbing her hands over her eyes, she gave a sigh. What to do? She had to study but oh how she didn't want to!
